The vaginal metabolome and stability of the vaginal microbiome
The vaginal microbiome is crucial to women’s and reproductive health, serving as a bioreactor of essential molecules, protecting against invasive pathogens, and providing early warning signs to the host immune system. It is known that the microbial composition of the vaginal microbiome changes over time. However, our understanding of these changes is limited by a simplified view of the microbiome, and of no thorough investigation of the factors that underlie these dynamics. During this lunch talk, I will discuss early results of my work on the analysis of compositional stability in the vaginal microbiome, its relationship to environmental and lifestyle factors, and the vaginal metabolome.
Comprehensive single-nucleus transcriptomic analysis of frontotemporal dementia.
Frontotemporal dementia is an umbrella term that represents a clinically, genetically, and pathologically heterogenous group of neurodegenerative disorders, characterized by changes in behavior, personality and speech. To gain cell-type specific insight into the transcriptomic profile, and to identify pathways involved in specific frontotemporal dementia subtypes, we generated single-nuclei RNA sequencing data of 107 pathologically confirmed patients and neurologically healthy controls. In this talk, I will focus on the data processing of this large dataset, including demultiplexing, QC and doublet identification, and report preliminary findings at the major brain cell type level.
The Biomina Lunch Talks are an initiative of a number of young researchers in the biomina network and is sponsored by the Flemish Government.
We aim to stimulate the interaction between researchers from different disciplines who encounter bioinformatics and computational biology, and consequently we focus on a broad and multidisciplinary public. With this informal medium we would like to provide a platform where knowledge and experience can be presented and exchanged, across partners from both academia and industry.
In this manner we have had the pleasure to welcome speakers from various institutes such as the University of Antwerp, the Institute of Tropical Medicine, Janssen Pharmaceutica, the Antwerp University Hospital and Open Analytics.
Last but not least, these sessions can provide a great opportunity for young researchers to acquaint themselves with new ideas and methods in the field of bioinformatics and medical informatics.
